Saeed Jaffrey
Biography
Saeed Jaffrey was a British-Indian actor whose work across film, radio, stage and television lasted six decades and more than 150 movies. He started out as an announcer for All India Radio in 1951, earned a drama degree in the United States in 1957, and later helped bring together the filmmakers James Ivory and Ismail Merchant, acting in several of their productions. His break in Indian cinema came with Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977), which brought him a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, and his cameo in Chashme Buddoor (1981) made him popular with Indian audiences. He appeared in The Man Who Would Be King (1975) and had leading roles in My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and the television series The Jewel in the Crown, Tandoori Nights and Little Napoleons. He received an OBE in 1995, published his memoirs in 1998, and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2016, after his death in 2015.

Jaffrey became the first Asian to be nominated for both British and Canadian film awards. In 1995 he received an OBE for his services to drama, becoming the first Asian to be given that honor.

Jaffrey rehearsed with the National Players for the 1957 to 58 season in September 1957. The professional touring company performed classical plays across America, and he was the first Indian to tour Shakespearean plays in the United States.

Jaffrey was the first Indian to take a starring role in London's West End theater, playing a Pakistani photographer in On A Foggy Day.
Early training
In 1958, Jaffrey became a member of Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio. That same year, he took the lead role in an Off-Broadway staging of Federico Garcia Lorca's Blood Wedding.
Big break
For his part in Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari, released in 1977, Saeed Jaffrey received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award the following year. That film marked his entry into Indian cinema.
