Plot summary
Catherine is turning twenty-seven in the Chicago house where she spent five years caring for her father, Robert. He was a mathematician at the University of Chicago, and his mind slipped away long before his death. His funeral is the next day, and her older sister Claire has come from New York to settle his affairs. Hal, who once studied under Robert, is working through the notebooks Robert left behind, pages of meaningless notes, hoping a lucid moment produced something of value. Catherine gave up her own studies to stay with him, and she worries that his illness will pass to her. Claire wants her to return to New York.
