Plot summary
In 1951, Gurukant Desai lives in Idar, a village in Gujarat, where his father, the headmaster Kantilal, tells him that dreams of wealth do not come true. Guru goes to Turkey, works in the spice trade and for Burmah Shell, then turns down a promotion and returns home to work for himself. With no capital, he marries Sujata, the older sister of his friend Jignesh, because her dowry can fund a venture, and the three move to Bombay to trade textiles. Licenses and quotas there belong to a small group of established families, and Guru meets resistance from Arzan Contractor and the official K. R. Menon. The newspaper publisher Manikdas Gupta, called Nanaji, mentors him through those early lean years.
