Plot summary
Jay Fennel, a marine archeologist, dives to rescue his wife Laura, who is trapped in the wreck of a British merchant ship. He comes out of it brain-dead in a Boston hospital. In his coma he travels to Pune, India, in 1778, as the East India Company advances on the palaces. He lives there as Captain James Stewart, a young officer who looks strikingly like him, handed a dangerous mission. On the way James meets Tulaja Naik, a Maratha warrior, and falls deeply in love with her, a love he has to fight for. A ring, the story says, can cross time and save a life.
