Plot summary
Kit Marlowe writes books, and her work brings her back to the town where she grew up. She calls on Millie, the friend she has known since they were children. Millie is Preston Drake's wife and is pregnant, and she has finished a romance novel of her own. She hands the manuscript to Kit and asks her to take it to her publisher. Kit has a talk to give in the town while she is there.

- Bette Davis wanted Norma Shearer to play Millie Drake, but Shearer, who was semi-retired, declined the secondary role and second billing. Miriam Hopkins accepted instead, despite a difficult working relationship with Davis on The Old Maid; Davis was alleged to have had an affair with Hopkins' husband, Anatole Litvak.
- Franz Waxman, who had just left MGM, composed the score, and in 1948 he turned its main theme into a concert piece, Elegy for Strings and Harp(s), in memory of Warner Bros. music head Leo B. Forbstein, who had died that March. Waxman conducted its world premiere at the Hollywood Bowl that year.
