Leslie Banks
Biography
Leslie Banks was an English actor, director and producer who worked on stage and in films. Born in Liverpool, he started with Frank Benson's troupe and in October 1911 played Old Gobbo in The Merchant of Venice at Brechin. He later acted in London's West End, becoming a leading dramatic performer, and in New York Kenneth Macgowan encouraged him to try Hollywood. His first credited screen role came in The Most Dangerous Game (1932), as a Russian hunter of human prey, and he was best remembered for that part and for starring in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934). His films also included Fire Over England (1937), Jamaica Inn (1939), Went the Day Well? (1942), Laurence Olivier's Henry V (1944), The Small Back Room (1949) and David Lean's Madeleine (1950). On stage he appeared as Captain Hook in Peter Pan and in the title role of Clive of India. He died in 1952.
