Plot summary
At seventeen, Ellie tells her mother that she is gay, and her mother is taken aback by how openly her daughter says it. Ellie has a crush on her classmate Abbie and is nervous about asking her to the year 12 formal. As she tries to summon the courage to issue the invitation, or to face refusal, she receives advice from her living Aunt Patty and from the spirit of her Aunt Tara, who campaigned for gay rights before she died in the 1980s. Tara objects to being called a ghost and prefers the title of fairy godmother, and she gives dating advice drawn from her own life as an out lesbian in the 1980s.
