Plot summary
In Nuovo Zelandia, males born as vampires are not killed at birth but join the Brotherhood, drinking blood donated by churchgoers. Women in the Jamestown slum are found with their throats bitten, and Lilly Squires, who leads the human police, takes charge of the case. She grew up in a Jamestown workhouse and cares about the people there. A boy who witnessed one of the attacks tells her a Brother was behind it, yet the police announce that influenza is killing people, an illness blamed on genetic research. The church's cardinals bring in a Brother, Silus, to work alongside the human police. He knows the attacker is Edgar, his own brother, who sends him a recording of one of his killings and the location of where he plans to strike next.
