Plot summary
In 2001, Australia beats American Samoa 31-0, and the islands' national team then goes a long period without a notable victory. After another heavy loss at the 2011 Pacific Games, Tavita Taumua, who heads the nation's football federation, announces he will hire a new coach. In the United States, Thomas Rongen has just lost his job with the American Soccer Federation, and he takes the American Samoa post because he does not want to be without work. He is frustrated by how little football skill the players have and by the island's limited facilities, and he dislikes Jaiyah, a faʻafāfine defender he considers short on discipline and focus. The players hold down several jobs each but are passionate about supporting the national team.
