Peter Madden

Biography

Peter Madden was a British character actor who became a familiar presence in British films and television across the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Ipoh in 1904, he built a steady career in small roles and was closely associated with Hammer, playing the innkeeper Bruno in The Kiss of the Vampire (1963) and a stern police chief in Frankenstein Created Woman (1967). His brief final Hammer part came in Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974), where he was a coach driver. On television he played Inspector Lestrade opposite Douglas Wilmer's Sherlock Holmes in a 1965 BBC series and appeared uncredited as a sinister undertaker in the opening sequence of The Prisoner (1967). His other small screen credits included Danger Man, Z-Cars, The Avengers, The Saint, The Champions, Out of the Unknown, Orson Welles Great Mysteries and Steptoe and Son. He died in 1976.
