Plot summary
In early 1960s Lancashire, Vic Brown is a draftsman at a Manchester factory and Ingrid Rothwell is a typist at the same works. They sleep together; Ingrid falls for him, and his own feelings for her never settle. When Ingrid learns she is pregnant, Vic proposes marriage and has to weigh the life he had pictured for himself against the one in front of him. Both hold steady jobs, yet a home of their own is out of reach, so the couple moves into the house of Ingrid's mother. Mrs Rothwell is protective of her daughter, domineering, and plainly against the match.
