Plot summary
Stan Butler drives a bus for the Town & District bus company and takes all the overtime he can get. The money covers the washing machine and other goods his mother and his sister Olive keep buying on hire purchase, and the work holds up while drivers remain scarce. The company then decides to revoke the long-standing rule that kept women out of the job. Stan and his colleague and friend Jack Harper are unhappy: the change threatens their pay, and it threatens the flings Jack conducts with women on company time and the layabout routine the pair enjoy at the company.

- Stephen Lewis did part of the skid-pan stunt himself: as Inspector Blakey hangs off the rear platform of a bus skidding at high speed, Lewis was attached inside the bus with a hidden rope while the camera filmed him from within. A stuntman handled only the exterior shots of him falling off.
- On the Buses was Hammer Films' first comedy in a decade, made under a deal the studio signed with EMI Films for a run of mostly horror movies; it was reportedly the idea of Hammer executive Brian Lawrence.
- Its box office gross was nearly 28 times its budget: On the Buses earned £1,500,000 in the UK and £1,000,000 overseas, making a profit of £532,000 for Hammer.
