Archie Duncan

Biography

Archie Duncan was a Scottish actor whose screen career grew out of the repertory theater and West End stage. He was born in Glasgow and worked as a welder in the city's shipyards for a decade before making his professional acting debut in Juno and the Paycock at the Alhambra Theatre in May 1944. Although he accumulated more than 50 television and film credits, he remained best known for two roles, Inspector Lestrade in the 1954 series Sherlock Holmes and Little John in The Adventures of Robin Hood, which he played from 1955 to 1959. He also appeared in Ring of Bright Water (1969), portraying the ditch digger who kills the otter Mij with a spade near the end of the film. Duncan died in 1979.
