Plot summary
Julien Maillat is a sergeant in the French Army. In June 1940, Maillat is at Dunkirk, where Allied troops are being taken off to England. German troops are closing in from all directions, and the fighting grows harder as they come nearer. Maillat tries to join the British on the Royal Navy boats that sail for Britain, but getting onto a boat is hard for him and for the French soldiers with him. On the beach, a British sergeant controls the lines of men waiting. He and the other French soldiers debate whether to evacuate to Britain or to stay and fight.
