Biography

Moe Howard was an American comedian and actor who led The Three Stooges, the slapstick team he toured with in vaudeville and later filmed with for decades. Born in Brooklyn's Bensonhurst neighborhood, he started in show business by running errands at Vitagraph Studios. In 1922 he joined Ted Healy's vaudeville act, and by the late 1920s he, Larry Fine and Shemp Howard were performing together in Healy's troupe. After the Stooges signed with Columbia Pictures in 1934, Howard settled into the take-charge, short-tempered character who bullied and slapped his partners. The team made 190 comedy shorts, and their short Men in Black earned its only Academy Award nomination. Columbia sold the shorts to television, bringing the group a new audience, and Howard led a revived lineup through feature films such as Have Rocket, Will Travel (1959) and The Outlaws Is Coming (1965). He took minor screen roles and appeared on television programs before his death in 1975.
