Larry Fine

Biography

Larry Fine was an American comedian, actor and musician best known as the middle member of the Three Stooges, often called the Middle Stooge. Born in Philadelphia, he began as a violinist in vaudeville, and in 1928 he was hosting at a Chicago club when Ted Healy and Shemp Howard recruited him as a replacement stooge. Healy paired him with Shemp and Moe Howard in 1929; they toured in stage revues and made the film Soup to Nuts (1930), after which Fine and the Howards left Healy to perform on their own. In 1932 they reunited with Healy and added Curly Howard, and from 1934 the trio made more than 200 shorts in which Fine was the put-upon voice of reason between Moe's bluster and Curly's foolishness. His films included Disorder in the Court (1936), Fuelin' Around (1949) and He Cooked His Goose (1952), and the act gained a new television following in 1959.
