Plot summary
Brantley Foster, a recent college graduate from Kansas, moves to New York City for an entry-level finance job and is laid off before his first day when the company is taken over. Interviews elsewhere go nowhere, so he takes a place in the mail room of the Pemrose Corporation, the firm run by his uncle Howard Prescott, which is preparing for a hostile takeover bid from Donald Davenport. There he meets Christy Wills, a fellow financial wizard and Harvard graduate. Convinced that the executives are making damaging decisions, Brantley uses his mail room access to invent Carlton Whitfield, a new executive, and starts leading two lives inside one building.
