George Curzon
Biography
George Curzon was a British actor who came to films after a career in the Royal Navy and on the London stage. Born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, he trained as a naval officer at Osborne, on the Isle of Wight, served in the First World War and retired as a lieutenant commander. In 1930 he turned to the West End stage, later acted in New York in the play Parnell, and then entered films with a small part in Basil Dean's Escape. He took a leading role for the first time in 1935 as Sexton Blake in Sexton Blake and the Bearded Doctor, returning to the character in two further films. He appeared in several Hitchcock films before he moved to Hollywood, among them Young and Innocent (1937), as a musician and murderer exposed by a nervous eye twitch, and Jamaica Inn (1939). He rejoined the Navy for World War II and continued to act in films until 1965.

A change of course
Curzon did his Navy training at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, on the Isle of Wight, and his first action came in the First World War. He left the Navy as a lieutenant commander, worked as a King's Messenger, and in 1930 moved to the West End stage.
First role
Curzon traveled to America, where he performed in the play Parnell on the New York stage, and later entered films. In Basil Dean's Escape (1930), he played a police constable in a minor part.
Big break
Curzon landed his first big part in 1935, playing the title character in Sexton Blake and the Bearded Doctor. He took that same role again in Sexton Blake and the Mademoiselle (1935) and Sexton Blake and the Hooded Terror (1938).
Getting ready for a role
Curzon acted in multiple Hitchcock films before relocating to the United States and Hollywood. His best known part was in Young and Innocent, playing a musician and killer betrayed by an eye twitch in a long crane shot Hitchcock devised.
