Plot summary
The Whitsun weekend leaves the village of Bramley End quieter than usual, with almost no traffic on its roads. A group of soldiers arrives, and because their uniforms mark them as British Royal Engineers, the residents welcome them. The visitors settle in among the houses, the church, the post office and the surrounding farms, where the Women's Land Army girls Peggy and Ivy work the land. Members of the local Home Guard and the postmistress, Mrs. Collins, are among those drawn into the soldiers' stay. As the holiday goes on, questions form among the villagers about what has brought the men to Bramley End and whether they are what they seem.
