Plot summary
At the home of the millionaire Mr. Lloyd, wealthy industrialists meet Richard 'Mack' McAllan, the engineer behind the Channel Tunnel and the Bahamas-Miami tunnel. He tells them that his Allanite steel and a radium drill devised by his friend Frederick 'Robbie' Robbins can cut a passage beneath the Atlantic to join England and the United States. The listeners doubt him. Lloyd and his associate Mostyn lend the scheme their backing, and the shares are bought. Three years into the construction, McAllan is a worldwide celebrity, yet the work keeps him from his wife Ruth and their son Geoffrey. Summoned to New York, he hears that people are losing faith in the tunnel, and Lloyd needs his fame to rally support. Varlia, Lloyd's daughter, keeps him company so the press will take notice.

- The Tunnel reused footage extensively from the 1933 German sound version of the same story. Bernhard Kellermann's 1913 novel had already been filmed three times, including a 1915 German silent and 1933 German and French sound films, both directed by Curtis Bernhardt.
- The screenplay went through a discarded first draft written by Sidney Gilliat before the film reached its final script.
