Biography
Julie Newmar is an American actress, dancer and singer who was born in Los Angeles in 1933 and began her career as a dancer, performing with the Los Angeles Opera as a teenager and later working for Universal Studios. She landed her first major role as Dorcas in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), and made her Broadway debut in Silk Stockings in 1955. Playing Katrin Sveg in The Marriage-Go-Round brought her a Tony Award, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe for the 1961 film version. On television she starred as Rhoda the Robot in My Living Doll and as Catwoman in Batman, a part she voiced again for the animated films Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (2016) and Batman vs. Two-Face (2017). Later credits include Mackenna's Gold (1969) and a cameo as herself in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995).

Newmar was fired during rehearsals for the 1973 Broadway play Boom Boom Room by director Julie Bovasso and replaced by her own understudy, Mary Woronov.
A role that slipped away
Newmar was Catwoman on the 1960s Batman series, but Lee Meriwether took the part in the 1966 film since Newmar did not know a movie was planned and had signed onto a Monsieur Lecoq adaptation that was never made.
First role
Newmar originated the three-minute cameo part of Stupefyin' Jones in the Broadway staging of Li'l Abner. She remained with the production throughout its run, from November 1956 to July 1958.
Own stunts
Newmar modified her Catwoman costume by moving the belt from the waist to the hips to emphasize her hourglass figure; the costume is now held by the Smithsonian Institution.
