Plot summary
Milly cooks at the bar in a small Oregon Territory town in 1850 when Adam Pontipee, a farmer from the mountains, comes in to trade and asks her to marry him. She accepts, they wed at once, and she sets out for the homestead expecting a place of her own. There she finds six younger brothers, Benjamin, Caleb, Daniel, Ephraim, Frank and Gideon, who are rude and expect her to cook and clean. She is furious. Milly teaches them hygiene, manners and how to court a woman. At a town barn-raising they meet Dorcas, Ruth, Martha, Liza, Sarah and Alice, and each brother falls for one of the women.

- The dresses worn by the female cast in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers were made from old quilts that costume designer Walter Plunkett found at the Salvation Army.
- Stanley Donen says MGM had the film shot in two versions, one in CinemaScope and one in normal ratio, because it feared not every theater could screen widescreen; the normal-ratio version cost more to make and was never used.
- MGM was far less interested in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers than in Brigadoon, which was filming at the same time, and cut the musical's budget to move the money to the Lerner and Loewe film, according to host Robert Osborne and star Jane Powell.
- Choreographer Michael Kidd originally turned down Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, asking how uncouth backwoodsmen with manure on the floor could be made to dance and saying "We'd be laughed out of the house."
- Choreographer Michael Kidd wanted dancers for all six of Adam Pontipee's brothers, but two non-dancers assigned by MGM were worked into the cast: Jeff Richards, given only the simpler dance numbers, and Russ Tamblyn, whose skills as a gymnast and tumbler were used in the dances.
