Plot summary
Government scientists engineer a biological weapon, a sentient creature they nickname Sentar, and send it into orbit aboard a satellite. The program loses control of it, and the satellite comes down within two hours; its contents lie inert until a passing couple disturbs them. The creature heads for Los Angeles. Police lieutenant Ian McLemore is paired with Carla Sandbourn, newly transferred from Atlanta, and Captain Robertson warns her about McLemore's habit of surviving the dangerous situations that kill his partners. At a double homicide scene on Innsmouth Road, McLemore and his partner Jerry Merris find a large organic pod and several smaller ones. Military police bar them from the site, and Robertson tells them the deaths have been ruled accidental. A woman who says she is a psychic keeps telephoning McLemore.

- After principal photography on Deep Space, Trans World executives ordered reshoots that added a military conspiracy against Fred Olen Ray's wishes, turning the monster into a man-engineered bioweapon instead of an extraterrestrial. The extra sessions took seven days, required new sets, and shot five different endings for the producers to pick from.
- Deep Space started out as a planned sequel to William Malone's 1985 hit Creature, but director Fred Olen Ray hated that script and instead used an alien story he had written six years earlier and kept in his personal archive.
- Fred Olen Ray cast veteran character actor Anthony Eisley after loving him in The Mummy and the Curse of the Jackals, a film Eisley himself considered one of his worst.
