Plot summary
After the death of his mother Hélène, Philippe Delambre is set on clearing his father's name by finishing the matter transmission work. His uncle François refuses to help, takes him to the old foundry laboratory, and tells him how André Delambre transmitted himself and then, on a second attempt, entered the chamber with a fly. Philippe hires Alan Hinds from the company and fits out a laboratory in the wine cellar of the house he inherited. Madame Bonnard, the housekeeper, and her daughter Cecile, a childhood friend, live there. When Philippe threatens to sell his half of the firm, François agrees to fund and supervise the project. An ashtray is the first object sent through intact.
