Plot summary
Cornelia Van Gorder, a writer of mysteries, has rented The Oaks, a country house in a small town, from the bank president John Fleming. Fleming has taken more than a million dollars in securities from his bank and hidden them inside the house. The town lives in fear of a killer called the Bat, said to have no face, who strikes women at night with steel claws. Cornelia's assistant, Lizzie Allen, tells her the servants have quit, and at a window Lizzie sees a clawed hand. Cornelia telephones the police, who say an officer will come. The Bat enters the house and lets a bat loose; it bites Lizzie, and Cornelia sends for Dr. Malcolm Wells to treat the bite. Dale Bailey and Judy Hollander visit; Dale's husband Victor, a bank clerk, is suspected of the theft.
