Plot summary
Sheilah Graham arrives from England and tells the newspaper editor John Wheeler about her royal lineage and her many connections. He gives her a column, and its blunt, gossipy tone builds its readership until she is offered a radio program of her own. At a party hosted by her friend Bob Carter she meets F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the two are drawn to each other. Scott remains married to Zelda, who lives in a psychiatric hospital, and he writes film scripts in Hollywood to pay what he owes, certain his novels no longer interest readers.

- What is not in the film, nor in Sheilah Graham's memoir, is that she revealed to F. Scott Fitzgerald that she was the child of Ukrainian Jews who had fled the pogroms and emigrated to England; in the memoir, Fitzgerald sent her the "Beloved Infidel" poem soon after she told him about her childhood in an orphanage.
- Director Henry King said the driving force behind the film was Gregory Peck, who read the novel and wanted to play the male lead.
- Beloved Infidel was the sixth and final collaboration between director Henry King and star Gregory Peck, the last of their six films together.
