John Gatins
Biography
John Gatins is an American screenwriter, director and actor who grew up around Poughkeepsie after being born in Manhattan. He studied drama at Vassar College and graduated in 1990, then went to Los Angeles hoping to act. Early horror appearances included Witchboard 2: The Devil's Doorway (1993) and Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993). While taking smaller parts in films such as Varsity Blues and Big Fat Liar, he began writing, and his scripts for Summer Catch and Hardball were produced before Coach Carter (2005). That year he also made his feature directing debut with Dreamer (2005), from his own screenplay. He later adapted Real Steel (2011), focusing the story on its father-son relationship, and his original script for Flight (2012) earned him an Academy Award nomination in the original screenplay category. Gatins also rewrote Kong: Skull Island and Power Rangers (2017) and has acted in Meet Dave (2008) and A Thousand Words (2012) alongside Eddie Murphy.
