Plot summary
Jack McCall is a literary agent who talks his way into book deals, and he bends the truth when it helps. He is chasing a deal with New Age self-help guru Dr. Sinja, who spots the lies but agrees all the same. The next morning a Bodhi tree stands in Jack's backyard, and he assumes it is a gift. He goes to Dr. Sinja about a five-page book, and when the guru visits the house, the two learn what the tree does: each word Jack says shakes a leaf off, and when the last leaf drops, the tree dies and Jack with it. Written words and gestures count too, and whatever happens to the tree happens to Jack.
