A role that slipped away
Buckley declined an offer to understudy the role of Nancy, choosing a different production instead. In 2008 she made her Off-West End debut as Anne Egerman in a revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical A Little Night Music at London's Menier Chocolate Factory.
Big break
Buckley was approached by Eddie Redmayne to play Sally Bowles opposite him in the West End revival of Cabaret, a role that won her the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2022.
Early training
Buckley went to summer workshops held by the Association of Irish Musical Societies to build up her singing and acting. There she was spotted as talented and urged to try for a London drama school, and she later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in January 2013.
Beyond film
Buckley worked with Bernard Butler, the former Suede guitarist, on a collaborative album called For All Our Days That Tear the Heart. Released in 2022, it made the shortlist for that year's Mercury Prize.
A role that slipped away
Buckley took over from Carey Mulligan as the star of Christos Nikou's first English-language film, Fingernails. She shot it in Toronto in late 2022 alongside Riz Ahmed and Jeremy Allen White.
