Plot summary
William Shakespeare pays off his family's debt by working as a tutor. He abandons his pupils when he sees Agnes call a hawk down to her falconry glove. Mary, his mother, warns him that people say Agnes is a forest witch's daughter and that the witch taught her herbal lore; Agnes uses those herbs on a cut above his eye. She wants a story from him, and he offers the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. Reading his palm, she foretells a successful future. Their intimacy leaves her pregnant, her family disowns her, and she moves in with the Shakespeares. They marry hastily, and Susanna is born in the woods. John, his father, beats him for refusing manual labor. Seeing how writing frustrates him, Agnes urges that he go to London, and she remains in Stratford with Susanna.

- Max Richter wrote 30 minutes of original music for Hamnet that Chloé Zhao played on set while shooting to set the film's tone, and Jessie Buckley shared Richter's 2004 track "On the Nature of Daylight" with Zhao, which inspired Zhao to reframe the film's original ending.
- The Globe Theatre scenes were not filmed at Shakespeare's Globe: production designer Fiona Crombie built a replica at the Elstree Studios backlot, because director Chloé Zhao and Crombie judged the real Globe too ornate for the film.
