Plot summary
A test that reads a fingernail from each partner to establish whether a couple is truly in love has been around for some years. Because most results come back negative, many couples separate or divorce. Anna, an unemployed schoolteacher, finds work at the Love Institute, the one-year-old company Duncan founded, where staff put couples through exercises designed to strengthen their bond and help them pass. Anna at first says nothing to Ryan, her boyfriend, about the new position, though the two of them have already passed the test. She follows Amir, another instructor, and the pair build an easy rapport while they guide clients. Amir says that Natasha, his girlfriend, passed the test too. At home, Anna runs her own private experiments on Ryan.
