Plot summary
Oleg Penkovsky holds a senior post in Soviet military intelligence and can reach top secret nuclear material. Disillusioned with Nikita Khrushchev's leadership as the risk of war with the United States grows, he contacts the CIA and offers to hand over what he knows. American and British intelligence prefer an ordinary businessman to a trained officer as the go-between, and they turn to Greville Wynne, a salesman, who goes to Moscow supposedly to look at commercial openings and forms an unremarkable business relationship with Penkovsky. Penkovsky wants Wynne kept on as his usual carrier, saying he will stay under the Soviets' radar. Wynne objects at first, but Emily Donovan of the CIA stresses what the work could do to head off a nuclear exchange, and Penkovsky visits Wynne's home and tells him he is betting his life on him.
