Plot summary
Edith Swan, a devout Christian, lives in the seaside town of Littlehampton with her controlling father Edward and her gentle mother Victoria. Letters full of profanities arrive anonymously at her home, and after nineteen of them Edward asks the local police for help. Suspicion falls on the neighbor, Rose Gooding, an Irish migrant and single mother raising her daughter Nancy. Rose is arrested; she cannot pay bail, so she waits two and a half months for her trial while Nancy stays with Bill, her partner. The police officer Gladys Moss is skeptical: the handwriting on the letters does not match Rose's. Her superior, Chief Constable Spedding, dismisses the observation and forbids her from looking into the case.
