Biography

Jacqueline McKenzie is an Australian actress of film and stage who was born in Sydney and trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. She made her film debut in Romper Stomper, winning Best Actress from the Film Critics Circle of Australia and at the Stockholm International Film Festival. On stage she played Ophelia in Hamlet and Joan in Saint Joan, and later took the lead in Proof. She played Diana Skouris in the US science fiction series The 4400 and appeared in the horror film Malignant. She also had roles in Deep Blue Sea and Beneath Hill 60. She won Australian Film Institute awards for Angel Baby and Halifax f.p. and a Logie for her role in the Romper Stomper television series, and received the Screen Legend Award at CinefestOZ. She was also nominated for Australian Film Institute awards for the miniseries Stark and The Battlers.

    While she was rehearsing for the play Rebecca, director George Ogilvie let McKenzie take time off to try out for Romper Stomper, a new Australian Independent feature film.

  2. First role

    In 1987, the pilot of the television series All The Way gave McKenzie the lead role. Ben Mendelsohn, Robert Mammone, Rowena Wallace, and Martin Sacks also appeared in it.

  3. Early training

    Jacqueline McKenzie trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), where she was accepted after an audition and graduated in December 1990.

  4. Big break

    Jacqueline McKenzie was cast as Diana Skouris, the lead female detective, in the US prime-time science fiction series The 4400. In 2004 the show earned the best debut ratings on US cable and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Best Mini-Series.

  5. A role that slipped away

    McKenzie could not stay with the production when it toured to Melbourne because she had other work commitments. Cate Blanchett then played Ophelia on that tour.

  6. A first

    McKenzie went back to Australia to play Catherine in Proof, the Pulitzer Prize winning play by David Auburn. Her performance broke every box office record previously set at the Sydney Opera House Drama Theatre.
