- In March 2000, British prisoner Robert Stewart bludgeoned his cellmate to death with a wooden table leg at Feltham Young Offenders' Institution; an inquiry heard he had watched Romper Stomper two days earlier and compared himself to Hando in the film.
- Geoffrey Wright's script was inspired by Dane Sweetman, a leading Melbourne neo-Nazi then serving a life sentence for murder in Pentridge Prison. Prison rules blocked an interview, so the two corresponded and Sweetman sent Wright a transcript of his murder trial.

- The characters Gabrielle, Davey and the punk girls were based on associates of Dane Sweetman, but his name was left out of the film's end credits, an omission raised in the Australian media during publicity for the film.
- Bassist Chris Pettifer told Vice in 2014 that he was disappointed that genuine neo-Nazi groups had embraced the Oi! songs recorded for the film's soundtrack.
