Plot summary
Shirin, a young Bedouin woman, is held in a Jerusalem jail until the Australian detective Phryne Fisher helps free her. Shirin's uncle, Sheikh Kahlil Abbas, brings her to Lofthouse Manor in England, where Lord and Lady Lofthouse have gathered friends for a memorial service for Phryne, believed dead. Detective Inspector Jack Robinson has traveled from Australia to give the eulogy, and Phryne arrives on her biplane instead. Shirin explains that as a child she survived a sandstorm that destroyed her village, rescued by a stranger. That stranger has since written to her, naming All Saints' Church and midnight as a meeting place, and Phryne offers to go in Shirin's place.
