Plot summary
Thomas Munro, a lay preacher from Britain, reaches New Zealand in 1830 on a storm-stricken ship, sent to minister to the first British colonists. When a clash breaks out between two Māori tribes, he intercedes for Rangimai, the young daughter of Maianui, chieftain of one tribe, and trades his horse to Akatarewa, rangatira of the other, for her life. Delivered to the British settlement of Epworth, Munro becomes Rangimai's tutor in Christianity. The settlers hold their land under an agreement with Maianui's tribe, yet Rangimai and Pahirua, the young warrior Maianui left to guard her and help with her religious studies, meet discrimination and prejudice from the settlement.
