Plot summary
In 1943, Tim Hilton has gone to Camp Claiborne after volunteering for the Army, and his wife Anne is back in the Midwestern town where the family lives with their two teenage daughters, Jane and Bridget. The household rations food, plants a victory garden and gives up the maid Fidelia, who offers to work part-time without wages. Anne takes in a boarder, the retired Colonel William Smollett. Tony Willett, a Navy officer and an old friend of the couple, visits while he waits for orders. Bill Smollett, the Colonel's grandson, serves in the Army as a corporal after being kicked out of West Point, and the two have a strained relationship. Bill takes an interest in Jane, who is drawn to Tony.
