Plot summary
Years after the Civil War, Colonel Lloyd, a former Confederate colonel, has not spoken to his daughter Elizabeth since she married Jack Sherman, a Yankee. Elizabeth, a Southern belle, and Jack have a young daughter, Lloyd. The three of them return to Elizabeth's home town, where the little girl charms her grandfather and seeks a reconciliation between him and her mother.

- The Little Colonel is best known for its staircase tap dance between Bill Robinson and Shirley Temple, the first interracial dance pairing in a Hollywood film. It was so controversial that the scene was removed from prints screened in the Southern United States.
- Fox head Winfield Sheehan, after a discussion with D. W. Griffith, wanted Bill Robinson for the film but doubted his acting. Robinson's contract would be voided if he failed a dramatic test; he passed and was brought in to star with Shirley Temple and teach her tap dancing.
- While filming, Shirley Temple prompted Lionel Barrymore for a line he had forgotten, and he stormed off the set in anger. Sent to apologize, she instead praised him and asked for his autograph, which brought him back to the set.
- The Little Colonel's final scene was shot in Technicolor, and the color process then available required actors to wear heavy red-hued makeup. It is the only time Shirley Temple wore makeup on the set of her Fox films.
