Plot summary
When the United States enters World War I, Bill Pettigrew, a young soldier from Texas, is in New York for basic training. A limousine carrying Daisy Heath, a Broadway musical star, knocks him down in the street. A policeman has the chauffeur drive Bill back to camp, and Daisy rides with him. At camp, Bill lets his buddies assume she is the date he had lied about, though he really has no one. The men learn the truth and decide to get even, taking Bill to Daisy's show on their next leave so he can introduce them. Daisy pretends to be his girl. As the two spend time together, she warms to him, and her wealthy boyfriend Sam Bailey, who is financing her show, grows jealous.

- Jean Harlow was originally cast as Daisy Heath in The Shopworn Angel but died before filming began. Joan Crawford then took the part, yielded it to Rosalind Russell, and MGM's newly signed contract player Margaret Sullavan finally played Daisy.
- The film's first-time screenwriter, Salt, had to obey the strict Hays Code and tone down the sexual content of earlier versions of the story. Daisy became a leading lady instead of a hard-edged chorus girl, and Sam her wealthy high-society boyfriend instead of a gangster lover.
- Margaret Sullavan did not sing her own numbers in The Shopworn Angel: her vocals were dubbed by Mary Martin.
- Melvyn Douglas was originally signed to play Daisy's wealthy boyfriend Sam Bailey, but the role went to Walter Pidgeon instead.
