Plot summary
Helen Bartlett is married to Kenneth Bartlett, a lawyer who refuses to defend anyone he believes guilty. His practice is in a slump, and he will not let his wife take a job. Helen has made no progress on her book, so she secretly goes to work as a secretary to Otto Krayler, a wealthy businessman whose apartment doubles as an office. The salary he offers is too high for the typing she cannot do, and on her first day he makes advances. She fights him off and flees, leaving her hat, coat and purse behind. She returns with her friend Daisy McClure, and police arrive: Krayler has been murdered. Questioned by Lieutenant Darsey, Helen spins possible versions of the killing while her one real worry is that her husband will learn about the job.

- Production Code Administration director Joseph Breen complained to Paramount Pictures that True Confession endorsed perjury, shown by Carole Lombard's character Helen Bartlett, and mocked the courts. Paramount was cleared to release the film only after MPPDA president Will H. Hays ruled its farcical tone offset the flippant view of justice.
