Groucho Marx
Biography
Groucho Marx was an American comedian and actor who worked in vaudeville, Broadway, film, radio, and television. Born Julius Henry Marx in Manhattan in 1890, he began as a boy singer in vaudeville in 1905 and later performed with his brothers Chico and Harpo as the Marx Brothers. With them he appeared in thirteen feature films, usually as a fast-talking, slightly shady protagonist who traded insults with stuffy dowagers and served as foil to his brothers' antics. He also starred in the comedy Duck Soup. His solo career centered on radio and television, especially as host of the quiz and interview show You Bet Your Life, which moved to television in 1950 and ran for eleven seasons. In 1974 he received an honorary Oscar for the Marx Brothers' achievements in film comedy. He died in 1977.

First role
Marx's career began in vaudeville in 1905, when he joined The Leroy Trio. He had responded to a newspaper want ad placed by Robin Leroy, who sought a boy singer, and Marx was hired.
Getting ready for a role
Before a vaudeville show in the early 1920s, Groucho Marx had no time to put on the pasted-on mustache he usually wore, so his greasepaint mustache and eyebrows came about on their own.
