Biography

Gloria Stuart was an American actress and visual artist who began acting in high school and studied at the University of California, Berkeley before working in theater in Los Angeles and New York. After signing with Universal Pictures in 1932, she appeared in pre-Code films and became known for horror and musical roles, including The Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Poor Little Rich Girl (1936), and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938). She also appeared in Gold Diggers of 1935 (1935), Here Comes the Navy (1934), and The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936). Stuart left acting in 1945 for a long career as a fine printer and artist. She returned to the screen in the late 1970s and won a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role as the elder Rose in Titanic (1997), earning Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Her final film was Land of Plenty (2004). She died in 2010.

Stuart received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. As of 2022, she was still the oldest person ever nominated in that category.
Behind the award
On March 8, 1998, the Screen Actors Guild honored Stuart with its Founders Award, and she also took the supporting actress prize, sharing it with Kim Basinger. Her peers gave her a standing ovation for both awards.
Behind the camera
Stuart learned typesetting at the Women's Workshop in Los Angeles, bought a Vandercook SP15 hand press and founded her own private press, Imprenta Glorias.
Beyond film
Paul McCartney's oratorio for orchestra and chorus, Standing Stone, includes a poem that Stuart read at her Hollywood Bowl debut on July 19, 1998.
