Jack Haley
Biography
Jack Haley was an American actor, comedian, singer and dancer who began as a song-and-dance comic headlining in vaudeville. Born in Boston and raised in Revere, Massachusetts, he cut a few phonograph records in 1923 and starred in Vitaphone comedy shorts in the early 1930s, then his wide-eyed, good-natured look won him supporting parts in musicals. Under contract to Twentieth Century-Fox he appeared in Poor Little Rich Girl (1936), Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938), and he fronted a radio program between 1937 and 1939. He was best known for playing the Tin Man, and the Kansas farmhand Hickory, in The Wizard of Oz (1939), a part he took over from Buddy Ebsen. Much of his work in the 1940s was for RKO Radio Pictures, and he later took guest roles on television.
