Plot summary
Helen MacFarquhar is a recently divorced bookseller in Loblolly-by-the-Sea, a small New England town, and she has just sent her daughter off to summer camp. Going through the mail at her shop one morning, she finds an unsigned love letter and assumes it was meant for her. She wonders at first whether it came from George Matthias, the local fireman and an old friend of hers. Then Johnny, the college student who works in her store for the summer, comes to dinner, finds the letter and reads it as a message Helen wrote to him. She takes his quoting from it as proof that he wrote it, and the two start an affair, each certain the other is the letter's author.
