Biography

Geraldine Fitzgerald was an Irish American actress born on November 24, 1913, who trained as a painter and began acting at Dublin's Gate Theatre in 1932, inspired by her aunt, actress Shelah Richards. After moving to London and then making her Broadway debut in 1938 opposite Orson Welles in Heartbreak House, she signed with Warner Bros. and received an Academy Award nomination for her performance as Isabella Linton in Wuthering Heights (1939), also appearing in Dark Victory (1939). Her later 1940s films included Watch on the Rhine (1943), Wilson (1944), and Nobody Lives Forever (1946). In the 1960s she found a revival as a character actor, appearing in The Pawnbroker (1964) and Rachel, Rachel (1968). Her subsequent screen work included Harry and Tonto (1974), Arthur (1981), Easy Money (1983), and Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986). She directed for the stage and was nominated for a Tony Award for Mass Appeal in 1982, and she won a Daytime Emmy Award.

A role that slipped away
Fitzgerald's clashes with studio management, including executive Jack L. Warner, cost her the part of Brigid O'Shaughnessy, the villainess in The Maltese Falcon (1941).
Big break
Fitzgerald first appeared in America opposite Orson Welles in the Mercury Theatre's Heartbreak House. After seeing that production, Hollywood producer Hal B. Wallis signed her to a Warner Bros. contract.
A first
Fitzgerald also found success as a theater director. In 1982, for a production of Mass Appeal, she was among the first women nominated for a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play.
Beyond film
In 1976, Fitzgerald took the stage as a cabaret singer in Streetsongs. That show had three successful Broadway runs and was featured in a PBS television special.
