Biography

Ted Ross was an American stage and screen actor who won a Tony Award for the original Broadway production of The Wiz. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, and raised in Dayton, he dropped out of high school, joined the Air Force, and found his calling after winning an amateur contest with a cover of Over the Rainbow. He worked as a singer and MC before his first stage role in Bigtime Buck White, which moved to New York City in 1968. On Broadway he appeared in Purlie, Raisin, and Ain't Misbehavin, then recreated the Lion in the 1978 film version of The Wiz. His first movie was The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1976), followed by Arthur (1981), Amityville II: The Possession (1982), Police Academy (1984), Stealing Home (1988), and The Fisher King (1991), his final role. He also appeared on television sitcoms including Benson, The Jeffersons, The Cosby Show, and A Different World.
