Plot summary
Recently discharged from the British Army in Israel, Professor Holly, the young Leo Vincey and their orderly Job mount an expedition into an unexplored region of central-east Africa. A map to the lost city of Kuma came to Leo from a woman he met in Israel, and visions of her keep returning to him. Kuma is ruled by Ayesha, also called She-Who-Waits and She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed, an immortal queen who believes Leo is the priest Kallikrates reborn. Two thousand years earlier she killed Kallikrates in a jealous rage when she found him with another woman. Leo is determined to reach her city.

- Hammer was happy with how Ursula Andress looked as Ayesha, but found her Swiss-German accent off-putting, so her entire part was re-dubbed by Nikki van der Zyl, who had also dubbed Andress in Dr. No.
- Hammer had the project turned down by Disney, Universal, Joseph E. Levine and American International Pictures before Michael Carreras got it financed through MGM, with triple the usual budget for a Hammer film.
- Casting Ursula Andress, then known for the James Bond film Dr. No, as the lead made She the first Hammer film to be built around a female star.
