Frieda Inescort

Biography

Frieda Inescort was a Scottish actress whose career moved between Broadway and Hollywood. Born in Edinburgh, she made her stage debut in 1922 in The Truth About Blayds at the Booth Theatre. She was the original Sorel Bliss in Noel Coward's Hay Fever on Broadway and also appeared in John Galsworthy's 1927 Broadway production Escape. Her film work began with The Dark Angel (1935) and continued in Mary of Scotland (1936), The Letter (1940) and You'll Never Get Rich (1941). She played Caroline Bingley in Pride and Prejudice (1940) opposite Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson. Later she had a leading part in Call It a Day and appeared as Mrs. Lawrence in Foxfire. She also worked in A Place in the Sun (1951) and in television, including a 1961 episode of Perry Mason. She died in 1976.
