Ann Rutherford

Biography

Ann Rutherford was a Canadian-born American actress. Born in Vancouver, she started in Hollywood in 1935 as Joan O'Brien in Waterfront Lady. She became a leading lady of Westerns at Republic opposite Gene Autry and John Wayne before joining MGM in 1937. At MGM she played the Spirit of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol (1938), Lydia Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (1940), and Polly Benedict in twelve of the sixteen Andy Hardy films from 1937 to 1942. MGM lent her to Selznick International for Gone with the Wind (1939), in which she played Carreen O'Hara. She also appeared opposite Red Skelton in the Whistling mystery comedies. After freelancing in the 1940s, including Two O'Clock Courage (1945) and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), she retired from films in 1950, returned for They Only Kill Their Masters in 1972, and made a final cameo in Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood in 1976.
